  2. This book is obviously written by someone extremely knowledgeable of the subject of data protection. Whilst the sibject could be considered to be dry, it is an essential part of any IT organisations day to day responsibilities, and, in this book, it is delivered in a very personal style, which makes it exceptionally easy to read. How often can you say that you’ve laughed whilst reading a book about Backup?

This is a highly recommended book that will step you through the minefield of data protection and it will either affirm that you are doing it well, or give you some insights into how you cann improve.

This book should be in front of every IT manager and on the desk of every administrator, or consultant, who is involved in data protection!

Go buy it! It’s your best insurance policy not to make a bad mistake!

I’m writing this review in part because this book currently has a two-star rating, which is a travesty. Anyone who works with backups on a regular basis would be remiss if they did not purchase this work.

This book will be especially useful to those individuals responsible for maintaining their backup environment but who do not have the time and/or experience to dive deeply into it. Your typical administrator will check for failures, re-run some jobs, and perform recoveries only when requested, and think they’ve covered their bases–only to discover one day that they can’t recover that important file/database/server! Why? Because somewhere down the line (initial design, process, documentation, etc) there was a critical oversight, and proper (and regular!) testing was not done to suss out these deficiencies. More than anything, this book aims to get administrators to approach backup management/design with skepticism and with an eye towards empirical results, which it accomplishes with numerous examples and careful analysis. The technical details will, of course, be useful as well (especially for those administrators who don’t have a lot of exposure to backup systems), but the tips/tricks and advice on how to properly design/manage your enterprise backup environment will be what sticks with you the longest.
